Fredericka Carolyn “Fredi” Washington was an American stage and film actress, civil rights activist, performer, and writer. Fredi Washington was born in 1903 in Savannah, Georgia, to Robert T. Washington, a postal worker, and Harriet Walker Ward, a former dancer. Washington was of African and European descent, being one of the first people of color to gain recognition for their film and stage work back in the 1920s and 30s.
